You've decided it's time to invest in Botox—now let's make sure you get the best possible results!

Botox aftercare is simple, but following a few important guidelines can help minimize bruising, prevent unnecessary swelling, and allow the product to settle properly. Most restrictions only last for the first 4–24 hours after treatment, making Botox one of the easiest aesthetic treatments to fit into your routine.

This article will guide you through eight things to avoid after Botox to help you achieve and maintain your desired look!

1. Avoid Rubbing or Massaging the Treated Area

For the first 24 hours after Botox, avoid rubbing, massaging, or applying firm pressure to the treated area.

Botox injections are meticulously placed into specific muscles to target the areas of concern. Using excessive pressure on the treatment areas may unintentionally spread the product, potentially resulting in asymmetrical movement or temporary facial drooping.

That doesn't mean you need to avoid all touch or making normal facial expressions. Just be gentle and avoid activities like facial massages, gua sha, or tight-fitting goggles that place pressure on the treated areas.

What Happens If I Accidentally Rub My Face After Botox?

Don't panic. A brief or accidental touch is very unlikely to affect your results. The main concern is repeated rubbing or significant pressure shortly after treatment.

If you’re concerned about having touched your face after treatment, you can reach out to Revive to have a provider assess your results and address any worries.

2. Skip the Gym for the Rest of the Day

One of the most common questions we hear is, "When can I work out after Botox?"

We recommend avoiding strenuous exercise for 24 hours. Vigorous activity, running, and heavy weightlifting can cause blood vessels to dilate, can increase blood flow, and may contribute to swelling or bruising while the product settles.

Additionally, any bending or inverted exercises, like certain yoga positions, should not be performed until twenty-four hours after the procedure. A leisurely walk or normal daily activities are perfectly fine.

3. Don't Take a Nap After Your Botox Treatment

After your Botox treatment, you should stay upright and avoid lying down for at least four hours.

Remaining upright gives the product time to settle into the targeted muscles and helps minimize the risk of migration. Resting your face on a pillow or a hand can put pressure on the treated area and cause it to bruise or the product to move to other areas of the face.

You don't need to stay standing the entire time—sitting, walking, working at your desk, or running errands are all perfectly fine. Just avoid taking a nap or reclining flat until the four-hour window has passed.

Does Botox Require Special Sleep Positions Post-Treatment?

It’s best to sleep on your back for the first night after your Botox treatment. After the first night, you can resume your usual sleeping positions.

4. Be Mindful of Medications and Supplements

Blood-thinning medications and supplements—including aspirin, ibuprofen, fish oil, vitamin E, and some herbal supplements—can increase your likelihood of bruising and swelling after Botox injections.

If these medications have been prescribed by your physician, continue taking them as directed. Otherwise, ask your provider whether temporarily avoiding them before and after treatment is appropriate for you. Never stop prescription medications without medical guidance.

5. Avoid Alcohol for 24 Hours

Avoid alcohol after Botox as it can temporarily dilate blood vessels and increase your risk of bruising and swelling around the injection sites. If possible, avoid alcoholic beverages for 24 hours before and after your Botox appointment.

Can I Drink Coffee or Caffeinated Beverages After Botox?

While caffeine doesn’t directly impact Botox in the way alcohol does, it can slightly raise your blood pressure and potentially contribute to bruising, especially if consumed in large quantities. For the best recovery, you may want to limit caffeine intake for the first 24 hours after treatment. Staying well-hydrated with water can support a smoother recovery process.

6. Skip the Sauna, Hot Tub, Tanning Booth, and Sun Exposure

For the first 24 hours after Botox, avoid activities that expose your face to excessive heat, including saunas, steam rooms, hot tubs, tanning beds, and prolonged direct sun exposure.

Heat can temporarily increase blood flow and inflammation, which may contribute to swelling or bruising immediately after treatment. While it won't "melt" your Botox, giving your skin a day to recover helps ensure a smoother healing process.

If you'll be outdoors, wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher and a wide-brimmed hat whenever possible to protect both your skin and your long-term aesthetic results.

7. Don't Apply Makeup Immediately After Botox

After Botox, you might notice slight red bumps at the injection sites, tempting you to cover them up with makeup. These bumps usually fade within 15-30 minutes. Applying makeup too soon can introduce bacteria to the injection sites and increase the risk of infection.

You should wait several hours before applying makeup to minimize irritation and avoid introducing bacteria to the injection sites. When you do apply makeup, use clean brushes or sponges and avoid pressing or rubbing the treated areas.

What Skincare Products Should I Avoid After Botox?

It’s best to avoid skincare products that contain harsh ingredients, such as retinoids, alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs), beta hydroxy acids (BHAs), and exfoliating scrubs, for at least 24 hours. These products can irritate the treated areas and potentially lead to redness or sensitivity. Additionally, avoid any products that increase blood circulation, like vitamin C serums, as they could contribute to bruising. Stick to gentle, hydrating products, such as a mild cleanser and a soothing moisturizer, to support healing and protect your skin during the recovery process.

8. Be Gentle With Your Facial Cleansing

You can wash your face after Botox, but we recommend waiting about 4 hours, then using lukewarm water, a gentle cleanser, and light pressure. Avoid vigorous scrubbing, facial cleansing brushes, exfoliants, or anything that puts unnecessary pressure on the treated areas until the following day.

Your regular skincare routine can typically be resumed after 24 hours unless your provider advises otherwise.

Aftercare Made Simple

Botox aftercare doesn't have to be complicated. Most recommendations are simply designed to give the product time to settle into the targeted muscles while minimizing swelling and bruising.

Remember to avoid rubbing the treated area, refrain from strenuous exercise, and stay upright for the first few hours. Protect yourself from heat and UV exposure, steer clear of blood thinners and alcohol, and handle your skincare routine with extra care. These steps play a significant role in helping you enjoy the full benefits of your Botox treatment. With these precautions in mind, you are well on your way to looking and feeling your best, ensuring that your investment in Botox yields the desired, long-lasting results.
