Knowing what to do after Botox is an important part of getting the most from your treatment.
The good news is that Botox aftercare is relatively simple. A few short-term precautions can help minimize side effects while allowing the neurotoxin settle properly.
Below, we're answering some of the most common questions patients ask us about what to do after your treatment.
How Long After Botox Can I Exercise?
We recommend waiting at least 24 hours before engaging in strenuous exercise.
Light, everyday activities like walking are generally fine. We recommend skipping intense cardio, heavy lifting, and workouts that significantly increase your heart. This can help minimize swelling and bruising around the injection sites.
Can I Take Ibuprofen After Botox?
Your provider may suggest avoiding medicines like ibuprofen and aspirin post-treatment. These medications affect platelet function, which can increase the likelihood of bruising.
If you take a prescribed blood thinner or other medication regularly, don't stop taking it without speaking with your healthcare provider.
If you need something for minor discomfort, acetaminophen (Tylenol) is generally less likely to increase bruising.
And remember: some bruising is completely normal after injections and usually resolves on its own.
Can I Drink Alcohol After Botox?
We recommend avoiding alcohol for at least 24 hours after a Botox treatment.
Alcohol can increase blood flow and may make bruising or swelling more noticeable around injection sites. Giving your body a day to recover can help minimize these temporary side effects.
How Long After Botox Can I Lay Down?
Remain upright for about four hours after your Botox treatment. Avoid lying flat, taking a nap, or putting prolonged pressure on the treated areas during this time.
Once the four-hour window has passed, you can go about your normal evening routine and sleep as usual.
What if I accidentally lay down after Botox?
Don’t panic! Briefly lying down after Botox is unlikely to ruin your results. Simply sit upright once you remember and continue following your provider’s aftercare instructions. The main goal is to keep the Botox in the muscles where the provider injected it.
If you're still worried about your results, you can always reach out to your provider to discuss any concerns you have.
Can I Touch My Face After Botox?
Yes, but you should be gentle around the treatment areas.
You can resume normal facial movements and gentle skincare after your treatment. Avoid rubbing, massaging, or applying significant pressure to the treated areas for the rest of the day.
When Can I Wash My Face After Botox?
You can gently wash your face per usual after your treatment. Use a mild cleanser and lukewarm water, and avoid aggressive rubbing or exfoliation around the injection sites.
You don't need to avoid washing your face altogether; rather, just be gentle with your skin as the Botox settles.
When Can I Wear Makeup After Botox?
You can generally apply makeup after your treatment as long as you're gentle around the injection sites.
If you have small bumps or redness, give the skin a little time to settle before applying makeup. These side effects typically resolve quickly on their own. When applying foundation, concealer, or other products, avoid pressing or rubbing the treated areas.
Always ensure that you use clean brushes and sponges when applying your makeup.
How Long After Botox Can I Get a Facial?
You should wait two weeks before scheduling a facial or other treatment that involves significant pressure, massage, heat, or manipulation of the face.
If you're planning to combine Botox with another aesthetic treatment, ask your provider about the appropriate timing. The ideal wait time can depend on the treatment you're receiving.
When Can I Get Microneedling or Lasers After Botox?
If you're planning microneedling or a laser treatment after Botox, it's generally best to wait about two weeks. This gives your Botox time to fully settle and allows your provider to properly evaluate your results before adding another treatment.
In some cases, Botox can be performed the same day, immediately after a microneedling or laser treatment. Your provider can help you determine the best timing if you're combining Botox with other aesthetic treatments.
Can I Go to a Sauna or Hot Tub After Botox?
You should avoid significant heat exposure for the first 24 hours after Botox.
Skip saunas, steam rooms, hot tubs, and prolonged exposure to high temperatures immediately after treatment. Heat can increase blood flow and may contribute to temporary redness, swelling, or bruising.
Additionally, be sure to protect your skin from prolonged direct sun exposure and wear broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher.
When Will I See Results After Botox?
You may notice changes within a few days, and you’ll typically see results settle around two weeks. Your final results can vary depending on the treatment area, dose, and how your individual muscles respond.
Botox temporarily reduces muscle activity, creating a smoother, more relaxed appearance while still maintaining natural facial movement.
How Long Does Botox Last?
Botox results typically last around 3–4 months, although individual results vary.
Botox isn't permanent because your body gradually metabolizes the product and the treated muscles regain activity. As movement returns, expression lines can gradually become more noticeable again.
Regular maintenance treatments can help you maintain your results over time. Your provider can recommend a treatment schedule based on how your results develop.
The Bottom Line
Botox aftercare doesn't have to be complicated. For the first day, focus on being gentle with your skin and giving your body time to recover. After that, you can generally return to your normal routine while waiting for your results to develop.
