MOXI Laser: 8 Things to Know Before Your Treatment

Laser Treatments

Laser skin resurfacing is one of the most effective ways to improve skin tone, texture, sun damage, and early signs of aging.

At Revive Med Spa, we offer MOXI™ by Sciton at all our centers. MOXI is a gentle, non-ablative laser treatment designed to refresh your skin with minimal downtime.

Whether you're looking to maintain healthy skin, treat sun damage, or prevent visible signs of aging, understanding how laser resurfacing works can help you decide if it's the right treatment for you.

Here are eight things to know before scheduling your first treatment.

1. Not All Laser Treatments Are the Same

One of the biggest misconceptions about laser facials is that every laser works the same way.

Ablative lasers, like ProFractional, remove the outer layers of skin, requiring more downtime and recovery. MOXI, on the other hand, is a non-ablative laser. Non-ablative lasers create controlled microscopic injuries beneath the skin while leaving the surface largely intact.

This stimulates collagen production and skin renewal with much less downtime than more aggressive resurfacing lasers.

Because every laser has a different purpose, the best treatment depends on your skin concerns, goals, lifestyle, and skin type. While MOXI is our most widely available laser resurfacing treatment, select San Diego locations offer HALO® and ProFractional®. These lasers are preferred for more advanced resurfacing and deeper skin renewal. During your consultation, we'll help determine which treatment is the best fit for your skin.

2. MOXI Is Ideal for Both Prevention and Correction

MOXI has become one of today's most popular laser treatments because it addresses visible skin concerns while supporting long-term skin health. It creates microscopic treatment zones beneath the skin's surface while leaving the outer layer largely intact. This controlled healing response stimulates new collagen and elastin production, improving skin quality from within.

Because the treatment is gentle and requires minimal downtime, MOXI is an excellent option for both prevention and correction.

MOXI is an excellent option if you're beginning to notice:

  • Uneven skin tone
  • Sun damage
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Rough texture
  • Acne scars
  • Dull skin

Many patients begin MOXI in their late 20s or 30s as part of a proactive skincare routine. Others choose MOXI later in life to improve visible sun damage, restore skin brightness, and stimulate collagen for smoother, firmer-looking skin.

Whether you're just starting to notice early signs of aging or want to refresh skin that's been affected by years of sun exposure, MOXI can be customized to meet your goals.

3. MOXI Can Be Performed on Many Skin Types

One of the biggest misconceptions about laser treatments is that they're only safe for lighter skin tones. In reality, lasers like MOXI are designed to treat a variety of skin types, including darker complexions.

For some patients, your provider may recommend a customized pre-treatment skincare routine. This helps minimize the risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) and optimize your results.

During your consultation, we'll evaluate your skin type, medical history, skincare routine, and goals to create a plan tailored to your skin.

4. Fall and Winter Are Popular for Lasers—but You Don't Have to Wait

You may have heard people refer to fall and winter as "laser season." That's because cooler months often mean less time spent outdoors, making it easier to avoid excessive sun exposure as your skin heals. Since UV exposure can increase the risk of pigmentation changes and interfere with your results, many patients choose to begin laser treatments during these seasons.

That said, MOXI can be performed year-round with proper sun protection. Wearing a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher, reapplying every two hours when outdoors, and protecting your skin with hats or shade will help preserve your results while preventing future sun damage.

5. Most Patients Tolerate MOXI Very Well

One of the reasons MOXI is so popular is because it's quick and relatively comfortable compared to more aggressive laser treatments.

Before treatment, a strong topical numbing cream is applied to improve comfort. During the procedure, most patients describe the sensation as warmth with a mild prickling feeling.

Treatment time typically ranges from 30-45 minutes depending on the area being treated.

6. Multiple Treatments Produce the Best Results

While many patients notice healthier-looking skin after a single MOXI treatment, the real transformation happens beneath the surface over time. As your skin repairs itself, it produces new collagen and elastin. These two proteins are responsible for keeping skin firm, smooth, and resilient.

Because collagen takes time to develop, improvements continue gradually over the weeks and months following each treatment. Each session builds upon the last, creating further improvements in skin texture, tone, fine lines, and overall skin quality.

For the best results, we typically recommend an initial series of treatments, spaced approximately 4–6 weeks apart. This process allows collagen production to continue between sessions while progressively addressing existing skin concerns.

Once you've completed your initial series, maintenance treatments help support ongoing collagen production and protect the results you've achieved. Just like your skincare routine, laser treatments work best when they're part of a long-term plan to keep your skin looking its healthiest.

7. Downtime After MOXI Is Minimal

Unlike more aggressive resurfacing lasers that require extensive recovery, MOXI fits easily into most lifestyles.

Immediately following treatment, it's normal to experience mild redness, swelling, and a warm sensation similar to a sunburn. As your skin heals, you may notice tiny dark spots, known as MENDs (microscopic epidermal necrotic debris). These are part of the skin’s natural exfoliation process and will gradually flake off over the next 5 to 7 days.

Most patients return to normal daily activities within 24–48 hours while following their provider's post-treatment instructions.

8. Your Results Depend on More Than the Laser

MOXI is an excellent tool for improving your skin, but long-term results don't come from a single treatment alone. The healthiest, most radiant skin is achieved by combining professional treatments with consistent daily skincare habits.

Maintaining your results means:

  • Following a medical-grade skincare routine to improve skin health and maintain your results between treatments.
  • Staying consistent with maintenance treatments as recommended by your provider
  • Protecting your skin from excessive sun exposure with broad-spectrum sunscreen, hats, and seeking shade

By combining MOXI with the right routine, you can continue to enjoy smoother, brighter, healthier-looking skin for years to come.

Are Laser Treatments Right for You?

No two patients have the same skin goals, which is why we offer multiple laser facial options.

  • MOXI is ideal for preventing and treating early signs of aging, sun damage, uneven tone, and texture with minimal downtime.
  • BBL uses light energy to target sun damage, pigmentation, redness, and visible blood vessels
  • HALO combines ablative and non-ablative wavelengths to address more significant pigmentation, texture concerns, and visible signs of aging (available only at Revive Carmel Valley)
  • ProFractional is designed to improve deeper wrinkles, acne scars, and skin texture through more intensive collagen remodeling (available only at Revive Encinitas)

During your consultation, our expert team will recommend the treatment that best aligns with your skin concerns, goals, and downtime preferences.
