Lip Filler vs. Lip Flip: Understanding the Difference

Lip Filler at Revive

Introduction

Lip enhancements are one of the most popular treatments in the aesthetic world, and today, there’s more than one way to get your dream pout without looking overdone.

Two of the most common, non-surgical options are lip fillers and lip flips. While they’re often compared, these treatments offer very different benefits and cater to unique needs.

So what’s the real difference between lip fillers and lip flips, and how do you know which one you need? Let's explore what differentiates these two treatments and how they can work in tandem to boost your confidence.

What Is Lip Filler?

Lip filler is a type of hyaluronic acid (HA) filler that is injected into the lips to add instant volume, improve shape, and enhance overall lip structure. Hyaluronic acid is naturally found in the body and helps attract moisture, which is why filler can make lips look smoother, fuller, and more hydrated.

When placed strategically by a trained injector, lip filler can also enhance the natural lip shape, define the lip border, and improve symmetry for a more even appearance.

At Revive, some lip filler options include JUVÉDERM® VOLBELLA® XC, Restylane® Kysse, and RHA® 3. These fillers are customizable and designed to create natural-looking results that still move with your facial expressions and feel like your own lips.

Lip filler is a great option for clients who:

  • Want noticeable fullness
  • Want improved shape and/or increased symmetry
  • Have naturally thin lips or age-related volume loss
  • Desire longer-lasting results
Lip Filler Before & After

The effects of lip filler are visible immediately after treatment and typically last between 6 and 12 months, depending on the product used and the individual's metabolism.

While patients may experience minor swelling, tenderness, or bruising, these side effects typically resolve within a few days, with the final result settling in around 2 weeks.

What Is a Lip Flip?

A lip flip is a subtle enhancement that uses neurotoxins like BOTOX®, Dysport®, and DAXXIFY® to change the appearance of the upper lip. Instead of adding volume, small amounts of neurotoxin are injected into the muscles around the upper lip. This relaxes the muscle, causing the lip to gently flip outward, creating the impression of a fuller upper lip.

A lip flip focuses on enhancing the existing shape to make the upper lip more visible, especially when smiling. This distinction is key in the comparison of lip fillers vs. lip flips, as a lip flip doesn’t change the lip’s volume, only its position.

Lip flips tend to be suitable for clients who:

  • Have an upper lip that disappears when they smile
  • Have an upper lip that naturally curls inward
  • Are new to lip treatments and want to start conservatively
  • Have lip filler but want to further enhance their upper lip
Lip Flip Before & After

Unlike lip filler, lip flips have minimal to no downtime. The lip flip usually "kicks in" after 3-14 days and lasts around 2-3 months.

As the treatment begins to take effect, it’s common to notice a brief adjustment period while your muscles relax from the neurotoxin. Clients often describe certain movements as feeling “awkward” at first, such as drinking from a straw, whistling, or fully puckering the lips. This sensation is temporary and typically fades as your lips adapt to their new movement pattern.

One important thing to note is that while lip flips are impactful for certain clients, the results are subtle and won’t dramatically change lip size or shape. For clients expecting fullness, a lip flip alone may feel underwhelming, which is why proper consultation and expectation-setting are key.

Lip Flip vs. Lip Filler: Key Differences

While both treatments enhance the lips, they serve different purposes.

Lip filler physically builds and shapes the lips by adding volume. A lip flip, on the other hand, enhances the appearance of the lips by adjusting muscle movement. Filler is longer-lasting and more customizable, while a lip flip is subtle, temporary, and lower-commitment.

Put simply: lip filler adds volume to the lips, while a lip flip reveals what you already have.

Choosing between the two depends on your aesthetic goals and maintenance preferences. Thinner lips that lack volume or a defined shape generally benefit more from filler, while upper lips that curl inward or hide when smiling may respond better to a lip flip.

Can You Combine a Lip Flip and Lip Filler?

Yes, and a combination of the two is frequently chosen for best results!

Using filler to add structure and volume, paired with a lip flip to improve lip visibility and movement, can create a balanced, plumper look that still feels natural.

Which Lip Enhancement Option Should You Choose?
